I think we all need someone to aspire to. As it says in Pirkei Avot, every person should find for themselves a spiritual mentor. I wouldn't call Chassidism a personality cult, even though the Chassidim have a close relationship with their Rebbe. For the majority I think the Rebbe represents someone they want to be more like and someone whose advice and guidance they trust more than anyone else's.

The rebbe
I can't understand for the life of me how a people that went through so much during the last 3000 years can cultivate such a personality cult for a single individual. As a jew, I find this greatly disturbing...Sorry if this offends anyone, I did not intend to, I just don't get it...
